I work at home full time, and in order to pass the time, I listen to progressive talk radio for at least half of the day. I have been dong this for around 5 years now, with Air America being the major provider. For a time, I was even a paying subscriber, until I saw the best and funniest hosts weeded out, Sam Seder, Mike Malloy, Marc Maron, Randi Rhodes, Chuck D, all kinds of original and funny voices have been muffled, either fired or given very limited air time, in favor of a new crew, mostly made up of former lawyers, i.e. Lionel and Ron Kuby, who seem to dull out the real message in favor of getting gooped up in legalities. Sure Lionel favors the legalization of pot and other good causes, but he does not have the punch and humor of all my past favorites. And he is the only Air America host I listen to. Basically it has turned into old former lawyer radio.
Stepping back a moment, when Randi Rhodes got in trouble for a stand up comic routine where she called Hillary Clinton a “big f’in whore” during the heat of the race with Obama, I simply stopped listening to Air America at all. Watch her stand up, and notice how the crowd loves it and eggs her on.
At this moment it seems that the two big networks that I enjoy, Air America and Nova M are both no longer available to me. While Nova M has filed for bankruptcy, and Air America seems to have screwed up their live stream, as they have continually screwed up their network. (UPDATE- the air america stream is now working – I’ll have to wait a couple months for their next update to screw things up again.)
By the way, Thom Hartmann, who was actually carried by both Nova M and Air America, parted ways with both of these networks and signed with a more traditional radio syndicate. From 12-3pm every weekday he streams live from his own website. Sure Thomm is a bit of a nerd, but he truly is one of the smartest guys you will ever hear.
Why the gradual demise of free progressive talk radio on the internet? The problem all comes down to advertising and the big money that corporate giants need to provide radio in order to make it profitable. A progressive show may start to catch on and get great ratings, but when the host starts to talk about shipping jobs overseas, corporate corruption, and mass media critique, this doesn’t jive with the corporations messaging, and they punish the stations by pulling their advertising.
I think the real future of progressive radio and media, requires walking the walk not just talking the talk. In other words, only take on sponsors that share the progressive values, and therefore there will be no conflict. The money will be minimal, but the hosts could also be guys like Jimmy Reefercake, who will work for peanuts and just need a soapbox and a microphone. Perhaps there is a future for allthehypocrisy.com in this arena…we shall see…
One other thing is that progressive radio doesn’t seem to get, is guys like Mike Malloy, who are abrasive and mocking towards conservatives, these are the ones who are really entertaining, like the Rush Limbaughs, it is much easier to entertain when you have a scapegoat to pick on and make fun of…the only difference is that Mike Malloy actually tells the truth….
Today, Muntadher al-Zaidi was sentenced to 3 years in jail for throwing two shoes at George W. Bush. Muntadher al-Zaidi is my hero. This from CNN
“I could only see Bush and feel the blood of the innocents flow under his feet, as he was smiling that smile — as if he had come to bid farewell to Iraq and with the last support and more than 1 million martyrs,” al-Zaidi said. “At that moment, I felt this is the man who killed our nation … the main murderer and the main person responsible for killing our nation.”
Speaking in his first public appearance since his arrest two months ago, al-Zaidi told the court he “got emotional and threw the shoe at him” and “the second one was involuntary.”
“I had no intention to kill the commander of the occupying forces … even if I had a weapon … I was expressing my inner feelings and those of all the Iraqi people from east to west and north to south and the feelings of hatred they hold for him,” he said.
Al-Zaidi told the judge that he had intended to humiliate Bush in the past. As Bush listed the gains made in Iraq during the mid-December news conference, al-Zaidi said he was thinking about the millions of civilians who had been killed, widowed or displaced. He talked about the sanctity of mosques being violated, the rape of women and daily humiliations.
“I don’t know what accomplishments he was talking about. The accomplishments I could see were the more than 1 million martyrs and a sea of blood,” al-Zaidi said. “There are more than 5 million Iraqi orphans because of the occupation. … More than a million widows and more than 3 million displaced because of the occupation.”
If you truly hate hypocrisy, how could you resist throwing your shoe at GW Bush?
Joe the plumber is not alone. Of course many hypocrites like to talk about how the social security program will never work. Any business that pissed away every profit it ever made wouldn’t last long. Well, it would be self sustaining as FDR proposed if we kept the surplus of workforce bubbles. But we haven’t. Mostly because the people running the government during the baby boomer prime earning years did everything they could to bankrupt every program in sight. The nine most feared words indeed. My new most feared words in the English language: “I’m a Republican and I want to run the government I believe is itself the problem”. If I worked for a company that elected as its president someone who firmly believed my company’s mere existence was an abomination, I’d be looking for another job. Newsflash Joe, Social Security has been one of the most successful and beloved programs in our history, until Reaganomics ushered in the new wave of anti-humanist republican party.. and by the way every advanced country in the first world has a program like it that works just fine.
Now this is a nice moment in hypocrisy…right after the crowd shouts out “kill him!! terrorist!!” McNasty says that his pleas are met with angry nastiness….Who is angry? Who is nasty? Obama supporters? Have they ever shouted kill him? Nope. Biden only professes his love for the poor confused bastard. But when you absorb the atmosphere at one of these republican freak shows, does this seem harmless like a harmless old jerk? This guy is a very dangerous man, who seems to take delight in violence.

TPM has a nice compendium of clips that throw McCane’s hypocrisy into stark relief. Let’s wrap this election up already…
