Will somebody please put this man in charge??? Can you imagine if this had been the health care plan that Democrats were pimping from the get-go? All the bullshit fretting and hand-wringing and, quite frankly, republican empowerment we could have avoided. But instead, Democrats act like Republicans, Republicans hypocritically demonize them for doing their dirty work, and the rest of us get disgusted and turn off politics. You’d think that the Democratic Party would somehow cease to exist if the insurance/drug company money suddenly dried up.
The public option is making a comeback thanks to Michael Bennet and three other brave senators. Contact Harry Reid now before all the Democratic Senators resign because Republicans are hurting their feelings. Maybe those of you popular enough to have more than 20 facebook friends can post this as well.
And here’s a little commentary on Evan Bayh, the latest Repub- er, Democrat to announce he will be leaving the Senate.
Yes indeed, this bill is now officially terrible. The obvious outcomes are higher insurance costs for all, millions of people forced to buy overpriced crappy insurance from ‘non profit’ fronts of for profit companies, and millions of pissed off middle class folks that will be forced to buy crappy insurance out of their own pocket. I’m fine with paying higher taxes to expand medicaid and/or medicare, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to support an insurance company giveaway.
Congratulations pussies. You’ve gobbled up all the poison pills they fed you.
I heard Mitch McConnell describe the trajectory of public support for ‘Obama’s’ healthcare plan…it peaked in the late summer/early fall and is now tanking. I guess he didn’t notice that the decline also coincided with all the compromises to the conservatives’ crappy ideas?
I nominate Dean for Hero of the Week for standing up to this shit. Please tell me I’m missing something…
I’ve been meaning to pimp up newly minted U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) ever since I stumbled across his campaign website prior to the election. Dude seemed almost too good to be true, but so far he’s been nothing short of a champ. He campaigned on the basis of having successfully sued war profiteers (aka military contractors) for ripping off taxpayers and endangering troops (see link above). Upon taking office he hired lefty blogger Matt Stoller as a policy advisor and landed a seat on the House Financial Services Committee, a gig which has kept him busy ripping new ones into those involved in the bank bailout debacle, five minutes at a time. I’ve assembled some choice videos. Enjoy!
Today, Muntadher al-Zaidi was sentenced to 3 years in jail for throwing two shoes at George W. Bush. Muntadher al-Zaidi is my hero. This from CNN
“I could only see Bush and feel the blood of the innocents flow under his feet, as he was smiling that smile — as if he had come to bid farewell to Iraq and with the last support and more than 1 million martyrs,” al-Zaidi said. “At that moment, I felt this is the man who killed our nation … the main murderer and the main person responsible for killing our nation.”
Speaking in his first public appearance since his arrest two months ago, al-Zaidi told the court he “got emotional and threw the shoe at him” and “the second one was involuntary.”
“I had no intention to kill the commander of the occupying forces … even if I had a weapon … I was expressing my inner feelings and those of all the Iraqi people from east to west and north to south and the feelings of hatred they hold for him,” he said.
Al-Zaidi told the judge that he had intended to humiliate Bush in the past. As Bush listed the gains made in Iraq during the mid-December news conference, al-Zaidi said he was thinking about the millions of civilians who had been killed, widowed or displaced. He talked about the sanctity of mosques being violated, the rape of women and daily humiliations.
“I don’t know what accomplishments he was talking about. The accomplishments I could see were the more than 1 million martyrs and a sea of blood,” al-Zaidi said. “There are more than 5 million Iraqi orphans because of the occupation. … More than a million widows and more than 3 million displaced because of the occupation.”
If you truly hate hypocrisy, how could you resist throwing your shoe at GW Bush?
Today was the 27th anniversary of John Belushi’s passing. I was just a kid when he died, and rather than explain a speedball to me, my father told me that he choked on a chicken bone. Which is, you know, in a lot of ways, more horrifying to a kid than just saying it was drugs, but whatever. I tried to dig up a clip of the Liz Taylor impersonation that my old man was referring to, but it doesn’t seem to be in the Hulu archives. So enjoy these instead…
Saw the John Stewart gag reel of the inauguration festivities and wanted to post up the full clip of the closing benediction delivered by 87 year-old Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery. This guy is a cool cat for any number of reasons, not least of which is being one of the original members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference founded in the wake of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. Let all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen. Say Amen. And Amen.
(When I went hunting around YouTube for the clip I was surprised to find the comments filled up with accusations of racism against this great man. Clearly a case of mass idiocy brought on by one of the hatemongers, only question was which one…. turns out it was Beck. You almost have to be a drooling moron to listen to Beck… that he has managed to flip his gig on the Headline News Ignorance Hour into a show on a semi-reputable network is a fucking mystery. My only guess is that the corporate media stooges are positioning themselves to cash in on “the backlash”. Either way, Glenn Beck is now officially the whitest man in America.)
Getting back to Rev. Lowery, that he was asked to give the benediction was truly fitting. Not only as the counterpoint to “Saddleback” Rick Warren, but also because he was there at the beginning of Obama’s nascent presidential bid with the eye of the prophet. I love this video in all its lo-fi splendor…
